Worked example

A vertical cylindrical tank has an internal diameter of 2 m and a height of 5 m. What is the volume?

  1. 01V = πD²/4 × H
  2. 02V = π × 2² / 4 × 5
  3. 03V = π × 1 × 5
  4. 04V = 15.708 m³
Result

The tank volume is approximately 15.708 m³.

FAQ

Does this calculate partial fill for horizontal cylinders?
No. Only full volume is calculated for horizontal cylinders. Partial-fill calculation is deferred to a future version.
Does this include dished heads?
No. Only flat-ended geometric volume is calculated. Dished heads (torispherical, ellipsoidal, hemispherical) are not implemented.
Are dimensions internal or external?
All dimensions should be internal. This calculator does not correct for wall thickness.
Does this include tank strapping tables?
No. Tank strapping table lookup is not implemented.
